8.22.2011: 1882 "Jim Crow" Passenger Car
Early 2010, I visited Glasgow Municipal Cemetery during the winter. Hidden amongst trees and vines, was a really awesome vintage passenger car. It was located along Leslie Avenue across from West Washington Street. Situated along some unused train tracks and surrounded by weeds and growth, it was very worn. I was happily surprised to see it still solid. I captured some quick photographs, more for future reference than for art. My plan was to return during the summer months. I wanted to capture the car in infrared photography. I had to wait for the foliage to be fully present and a day with warm sunshine. Unfortunately, all attempts to return this year, have been thwarted by wet weather. Today, as I drove by the location, I saw the car had been relocated to the front of the depot, next to the highway. I feared for the future of this historically significant local treasure. As a photographer, unique items carry additional interest. My goal was to determine whether or not the car was moved to be destroyed or preserved. Thanks to one night on Facebook, I have the answer. The car was donated to be restored and I was lucky enough to be chosen to document the travel preparations for Glasgow Daily Times and see one of my images on the cover! Here are a few of the images from that day, the rest are on my old archives and will eventually appear along with a copy of the cover of the paper.
